The History of Jerry's Marine
Jerry gets his love of outboards, racing, and anything marine honestly. His dad, Clay Pettefer began a successful outboard racing career in 1948. After racing for several years, Clay decided to open his own marine business, using the knowledge gained from competition. Clay opened his Mercury Marine dealership in 1963, on Shell Beach Drive in Lake Charles, Louisiana. After 4 successful years on Shell Beach Drive the business outgrew the facility and Clay had a need for more space. The dealership was moved to a larger location on Common Street in 1967. Clay was listed as one of the top Mercury Dealers in the US for several years. As a large volume Mercury Outboard Dealer, Clay was always in need of technicians for his dealership.
Here is where Jerry came into the picture. All through elementary and middle school, Jerry was attending races with his dad, working as his pit crew, hanging around the shop, watching the Technicians, learning about outboards, and acquiring an even greater interest in racing boats. Clay and Jerry both understood the key to a successful racer; he must know and understand his equipment. Jerry began working in his dad’s shop in 1970.
In 1975, with a growing family and an interest in becoming his own boss, Jerry’s Marine opened their doors in Sulphur, Louisiana. Jerry became a Certified Mercury Master Technician in 1978.
Jerry followed in his father’s footsteps and became one of the top Mercury Outboard Dealers in the US with numerous Awards for Mercury Outboard Sales and Service. With the business growing at an alarming rate, Jerry had soon outgrown his original location. In 1988, Jerry moved into the larger facility he now occupies on Highway 27 South in Sulphur, Louisiana. Jerry has continued to remain at the top of the list for Mercury Outboard Sales and Service.
And Jerry’s racing career….With a Multitude of High Point Championships and World Records, in several classes including Bass Boat Classes, Jerry has the Most Successful Outboard Racing Team in the World, with the credentials to prove it. This speaks volumes for Jerry’s’ expertise and knowledge when it comes to outboards and performance. As all racers know, one must understand and know your equipment, as well as having a keen eye for detail. |
